Wm. Cecil Giles Obituary

Wm. ‘Cecil’ Giles Jr., age 64 passed away all too soon on Thursday morning, August 15, 2019 after a two year courageous battle with Glioblastoma cancer.  He was a resident of Nineveh.

Cecil was born December 16, 1954 in Franklin and was the 4th out of 11 children to the late William Cecil and Bertha (Burton) Giles Sr. He was a 1973 graduate of Indian Creek High School where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. Cecil played pitcher and infielder on two sectional winning teams, in 1971 & 1973 and the Johnson County Tournament in 1971. In both baseball and basketball, he earned Most Valuable Player and All Conference Team awards. Cecil was the first Indian Creek athlete to receive a college scholarship to play two different sports in college.

He went on to attend Auburn University in Alabama where he received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education. After graduation, Cecil taught at Cobb County Community Schools in Marietta, Georgia and coached baseball and basketball for three years. Cecil went on to become the owner and operator of Cecil Giles Custom Homes where he built custom homes both in Georgia and Indiana for over 30 years. Cecil retired in 2018, due to health issues from the Carpenters Union, Local 301 in Indianapolis  

His true passion was helping children on and off the court. Cecil loved to teach the fundamentals of basketball and baseball. He coached 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball at Indian Creek Middle School where he had a team win the Johnson County Tournament. Cecil also worked as an assistant basketball coach at Clark Pleasant, Greenfield Central and most recently at Indian Creek High School.

He attended the Emanuel Church of Greenwood for the last 9 years. Cecil was a fan of North Carolina Men’s Basketball and Auburn University Football. He enjoyed fishing, playing euchre and hanging out with his friends at the Crow Bar in Trafalgar. Cecil truly loved spending time with his children and was very proud of who they have become and all their accomplishments. 

He is survived by his loving wife, Janet Donovan, whom he married on January 17, 2019 in Greenwood. Cecil is also survived by his children, Chelsie (Zac) Poindexter of Franklin, Taylor (Hamilton) Parton of Franklin and Evan (Jessica) Giles of Franklin; grandson: Easton Poindexter, the mother of his children, Kim Giles of Bloomfield; siblings, Bernadean Myers, Alice (Pat) Poynter and Jeanine (Johnny) Myers all of Greenwood, Donna (Leroy) Wesley and Ronnie (Jane) Giles both of Franklin, Danny (Tammy) Giles of Seymour, Hershel (Theresa Woods) Giles of Martinsville, Joyce (Lew) Rogers of Georgia and Randy (John) Giles of PA; and several nieces and nephews.

Cecil was preceded in death by his parents a sister, Evelyn Duncan.

The Rev. Danny Anderson will conduct a funeral service on Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Indian Creek High School Gymnasium, 803 W. Indian Creek Drive in Trafalgar. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. until service time on Tuesday at the High School. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown

An additional Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, August 27th from 6pm-? at The Crowbar Inn and Lounge: 209 State Road 135 in Trafalgar. There will be a buffet style dinner for $10 per person with half the proceeds to assist the family in expenses. The dinner will be for those 21+ and dine in only.

Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Cecil to the American Cancer Society, 5635 W. 96th St. Ste. 100 Indianapolis, IN 46278.
