William L. ‘Bill’ Lasiter, age 94 passed away peacefully on Friday evening, August 4, 2023 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Trafalgar.
Bill was born January 16, 1929 in Greenwood, to his parents, the late Harry and Hazel Parker Lasiter. He was a 1947 graduate of Center Grove High School and went on to retire after 40 years as a self-employed Building Contractor. He was able to build his family's first home in the middle of a corn field in Greenwood, using only hand tools. Prior to that, he worked for the Allison Division of General Motors in Indianapolis for 9 years.
Bill enjoyed talking about his childhood, especially about growing up during the Great Depression. Bill saw his grandfather lose the family farm along with many others who lost their life savings & possessions. He remembers his grandmother making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches on homemade bread for the hobos who passed through.
Bill was very passionate about three things that everyone should experience in their life: the smell of fresh turned soil, fresh cut clover hay in the summer and fresh cut wheat at harvest time. "These are smells you should never forget!" His love of the earth started at age 6 as he watched his father and grandfather farm. Even while he worked as a building contractor, Bill kept his hands busy with farming. After his retirement, he and his son, Dennis, continued to farm, raising cattle, corn, soybeans & hay. Bill felt it was especially important to his family's health to raise their own food & continued to be an advocate for clean eating throughout his life.
He enjoyed reading, being outdoors and traveling with his late wife, Nila. Bill and his late wife will be remembered for being dedicated parents who were passionate about passing along their strong work ethic & morals to their children. He loved spending time with his family and made sure they didn't miss out on any of the stories from his life.
Bill is survived by his children, Jenny (Bruce) Earlywine & Dennis (Lisa) Lasiter, both of Trafalgar; siblings, Don (Mary) Lasiter of Greenwood, Doris Rhodes of Franklin & Harry (Vicky) Lasiter of Mooresville; sister-in-law, Helen Lasiter of Greenwood; grandchildren, Michelle (Ron) Twaddell of Greenfield, Michael (Dawn) Earlywine of Indianapolis, Alicia Parrott of Franklin, Daniel (Audrey) Lasiter of Trafalgar & Jacob (Judy) Lasiter of Franklin; and great grandchildren, Stefan, Jordan, Savannah, Sophie, Allison, Alia, Brett, Charlotte, Bryce, Corrin, Bennett, Alayna & Haylie; and a great-great granddaughter, Layla.
