Shirley McCleery Obituary

Shirley Ann (Huff) McCleery, age 86, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, February 3, 2021 at Silver Oaks Health Campus in Columbus.  She was a resident of Nashville.

She was born September 16, 1934 in Landess to her parents, the late Russell C. and Mary E. (Haines) Huff. Shirley was a 1952 graduate of Van Buren High School and later that year married John A. McCleery on October 18, 1952 in Van Buren. He preceded her in death in June 1978. She was retired from Marion General Hospital, where Shirley worked as a Ward Secretary for over 30 years.

She was a former member of the Handfield United Methodist Church in Marion. Shirley collected hundreds of books to share with family and friends. She was a big supporter of the Brown County Humane Society and enjoyed caring for her dogs and cats, as well as, caring for and feeding wild animals at her home in Nashville. Shirley was a fan of Indiana University Men’s Basketball and enjoyed watching the PGA on television.

She was a loving homemaker, mother and grandmother. Shirley is survived by her children, Hannah Evans of Hartford City and Russell C. McCleery of Winchester; sister, Sharon (James) Tinsely of Warren; grandchildren, John A. Evans of Hartford City, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Ogden of Ohio and Emily (Christopher) Carpenter of Portland; and great grandchildren: Erin Kramer, Haley Ogden, Isaiah & Abigail Evans, Sean, Peyton and Avery Carpenter.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John A. McCleery; and a son, John K. McCleery.

In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, she will be cremated with a celebration of life service to be held at a future date. Cremation services have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
