Obituary

Samuel E. Smith, age 85, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2022 at IU Health – Methodist in Indianapolis.  He was a resident of Columbus.

Samuel was born January 29, 1937 in Jackson County, to his parents, the late Edison M. and Jane (Worral) Smith. He was a graduate of Floyd Central High School in New Albany and went on to serve with the United States Army. Samuel retired in 1995 as a Supervisor from Cummins Engine Company in Columbus.

He enjoyed living in the country and roaming his 57 acres. Samuel was an avid horseback rider and taught his family and friends to be the same. He also enjoyed caring for many animals on his property, especially his dogs and chickens. Samuel was a fan of rodeos and enjoyed horseback riding on the Cross-Country Trail Ride in Eminence, Missouri for the past 40 years.

He was preceded in death on December 21, 2020 by his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley R. (Burgin) Smith, whom he married on November 30, 1963.

Samuel is survived by his children, Pamela (John Branham) Smith of Morgantown and Troy Smith of Columbus; and a grandson, Wyatt Branham of Morgantown.

In keeping with Samuel’s wishes, he will be cremated and a Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date. Cremation services have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.

Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Samuel to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
