Mary Stockton Obituary

Mary Elizabeth (Miller) Stockton of Morgantown, IN passed away on Saturday June 13, 2020 at the Indiana Masonic Home in Franklin, IN.  Born May 12, 1925 to the late Chester A. and Chattie (Wade) Miller, she graduated from Morgantown High School in 1943.  Mary attended Central Normal Teachers College in Danville, IN.  Mary wed Joseph F. Stockton on November 23, 1945 in Martinsville. She was a lifelong resident of Morgantown.

Mary worked at Camp Atterbury as a Post Transportation Clerk as well as in the Allergy Clinic during WWII.  She was employed by Fawcett-Umphrey Chair Factory in Morgantown and was a bookkeeper for Stockton Company.

A lifelong member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church, Mary cherished her time as a Sunday School teacher.   She was also part of the steering committee for the Morgantown Veteran’s Memorial now standing in East Hill Cemetery.

Mary loved history and devoted years to uncovering the family genealogy.  She incorporated her pursuits into family outings, often packing picnics and visiting local cemeteries. She would spend hours searching libraries and corresponding with possible connections to prove or disprove a lineage.  Mary never met a stranger and she reveled in her daily log where important family events were recorded.  Mary loved playing cards - especially euchre - with friends and family.  Many great tales were shared over a cup of coffee and a deck of cards. With an insatiable appetite for knowledge, Mary was a wordsmith and often referred to as a walking dictionary by her classmates.  Comic strips always brought her so much joy, and she often clipped strips to save and laugh again. In her later years, she created award-winning counted cross-stitch pictures, many of which were her own design.   She enjoyed solving crossword or cryptogram puzzles and finding treasures at yard sales with friends.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Stockton, her sister Henrietta (Miller) Hickman.  Survivors include her son Thomas A. and Maryann (Perry) Stockton, daughter Kay L. Stockton, grandchildren Thomas, Jr. and Annemarie Stockton.  Nephews/nieces Jerry Tracy, John Stockton, Sarah (Stockton) Wible and many great-nephews and great-nieces, as well as her best friend Carolyn Adams.

The family would like to extend our gratitude to the Morgantown Police and Fire Departments for their assistance.  We are deeply indebted to the nurses and staff at the Indiana Masonic Home for the very special care taken with Mary during the time family could not be present.

The Rev. Ann Spahr will conduct a funeral service on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Meredith – Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
