Lillian Chaney Obituary

Lillian L. (Oetzel) Chaney, passed away peacefully in her 106th year on Thursday morning, May 25, 2023 at Grand Valley Health & Rehabilitation in Martinsville. She was a longtime resident of Morgantown.

Lillian was born April 12, 1917 in Alexandria, Kentucky to her parents, the late George R. and Julia F.  (Smith) Oetzel. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker.

Lillian was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Everett W. Chaney, whom she married on June 28, 1936 in Lynchburg, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by sons, Ben Willard Chaney, Rodney Dale Chaney & J. Daryel Chaney; siblings, Lorena Steinborn, Geneva Heckel, Nina Fisher, Nellie Fankboner, Dora Fugazzi, Georgia Brown, Ora Mathias, Austin Oetzel & William Oetzel.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Bret (Rhonda) Chaney of Morgantown, Ty (Mary Beth) Chaney of Greenwood, Clay Chaney of Bargersville & Travis (Elizabeth) Dushane of Hawaii; 19 great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren; daughter-in-law and caregiver, Karen Rogers of Morgantown as well as many friends.

Lillian will be remembered for being very active and always out to enjoy life to the fullest. During her 100th birthday party, State Senators Rodric Bray and Peggy Mayfield attended to acknowledge her accomplishment and Martinsville Mayor Shannon Kohl presented her with a Certificate of Recognition. She loved to be involved and to meet new people. Lillian was a member of many local Senior Centers including, Bargersville, Martinsville, Nashville, Nineveh & Morgantown. She was also a 37-year member of the First Christian Church in Morgantown. Lillian was a former member of the Bluff Creek Christian Church, Women of the Moose and American War Mothers. 

Lillian will be remembered for her love of dancing, especially square dancing. She was a member of the Buc’s & Does Square Dancers and the Blue Bluff Stompers. Lillian enjoyed sewing, playing euchre and visiting with family, friends and her church family.

The Rev. Burt Brock will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday at Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center located at 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown.  Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
