John A. Myers, age 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at the IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Martinsville and lifelong resident of Morgan County.
John was born June 28, 1933, in Paragon, to his parents, the late Claude and Delpha (Stierwalt) Myers. He was a 1950 graduate of Martinsville High School. John married his loving wife, Betty. J. McAninch, on August 2, 1952 in Martinsville. She survives after 67 devoted years of marriage.
From 1953-1957, John served his country with the United States Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, where he was a weather instructor. After serving his country, John attended Marion College, where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1960. He later earned his Master’s Degree in 1964 from Ball State University.
John spent 24 years in Education, where he taught at the Brooklyn School in Morgan County, was Principal at South School in Martinsville and ended his teaching career at Central School in 1985. After retirement, John spent many hours working in his garage on automobiles and tinkering with anything that came along. He enjoyed working on and fixing various items for friends and family. He was a past member of the Martinsville Wesleyan Church and former member of the Indiana State Teacher’s Association.
John will be dearly missed by his devoted wife, Betty Myers of Martinsville, loving daughter, Terri Newman of Martinsville, loving granddaughter Britni (TJ) Smead of Indianapolis and sister Sally Anderson of Waynesburg, Kentucky.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son Stephen E. Myers, brothers Fred and Frank Myers and two infant grandchildren.
Rev. Barry Whitaker & Rev. Jeff Floyd will conduct a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 14th at the First Church of the Nazarene: 1609 John R. Wooden Drive in Martinsville. Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Friday March 13th at the church. Burial will be at Old South Park Cemetery in Martinsville with Military Rites presented by the United States Air Force and the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
