Jan Fowler Obituary

Jan A. Fowler, age 72 passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021 at his home in Morgantown.

He was born September 28, 1948, in Batesville, to the late Alden and Margaret (Kramer) Fowler.  He graduated from Greensburg Community High School in 1967 and went on to serve in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. He served three tours in Vietnam and received both individual and unit citations and awards from the United States and Vietnamese Governments.

After serving his country, Jan obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from Butler University, and later attended John Herron Art Institute, focusing in photography. While at Butler, he was the Editor and Photo Editor of the year book. Jan was placed on the Dean’s List, the Honor Roll and was awarded the Distinguished Student Award.

He was a professional photographer and later worked as a Salesman for CarQuest, working in the Martinsville and Morgantown area for 8 years. Jan also managed the Army Surplus Store in Martinsville. He was a photographer for several Indianapolis Radio Stations and was published in publications for Radio, TV and Music Entertainment.

Jan became a master diver in 1981. His focus was in underwater photography, underwater navigation, nighttime zero visibility, land water operations, and waterborne search and rescue. He was a former Brown County Deputy Director for the EMA, and taught search and water rescue for several years. Jan enjoyed riding his Harley, gunsmithing, knife designing and competitive shooting. In 1980 and 1981, he was awarded the title of State Champion in the Freestyle Archery division for two years in a row. He also enjoyed racing and entering car shows throughout the country with his “ORC” Obligatory Red '74 Z28 Camaro. For 10 years his car was the #1 Show Car in the nation in his division. His love of cars and photography gave him the opportunity to become a Track Photographer, film developer and dark room controller for the Indy 500 in the 1980’s.

Jan is survived by his wife of 25 years Barbara Ewer-Jones, whom he married on February 23, 1996 in Shelbyville, Tennessee. He is also survived by his sister, Diane N. Fowler and his nephew, Kevin Grimes both of Osgood.
