Helen M. (Smitha) Hutton

Helen M. (Smitha) Hutton, age 81, passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, November 2, 2020 at the Waters of Martinsville.  She was a resident of Morgantown.

Helen was born July 28, 1939 in Madison, Indiana to her parents, the late Truman H. and Mary "Dolly” (Ballard) Hummel. She married David John Hutton on September 9, 1961 in Indianapolis and together they raised four children.  He preceded her in death on July 16, 1993 after 32 devoted years of marriage.

In the 1960’s Helen worked in assembly at RCA in Indianapolis. She also worked at Critser’s Greenhouse for several years. Helen was very involved in her children’s lives. When they were in elementary school, she was active in the PTA at Morgantown Elementary School and later at Indian Creek Elementary School.  Helen would volunteer many hours as a room mother and would help organize the annual holiday bazaar. She would spend hours every year making holiday ornaments for the students in each of her children’s classroom.

Helen belonged to a Wednesday and Saturday Bowling League in Indianapolis for 10 years before moving to Morgantown. She enjoyed crocheting baby afghans, crafting with plastic canvas and working word search puzzles. Helen also enjoyed watching the Sci-Fi and History channel as well as spending time in the outdoors by tending to her gardens.

She will be missed by her children: Robin L Hutton of Morgantown, Sandy (Ed) DeWeese of Martinsville, Becky (Brian) Price and Donna (Troy) Phelps all of Morgantown, grandchildren: Jason Porter, Kathy Neal, Kelly DeWeese, Wesley Price, Megan Price, David Phelps, Nathan Phelps, Allan Phelps and great grandchildren: Sebastian and Sully.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents and best friend: Peggy Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Burial will follow at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown.
