Obituary

Elmer Leroy Ramey, age 88 passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday evening, November 12, 2020 at Franciscan Health Hospital in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Trafalgar and former resident of Nineveh and Peoga.

Elmer was born September 7, 1932, in Johnson County, to the late William E. and Mary E. (Coovert) Ramey. Elmer was a 1950 graduate of Nineveh High School and went on to proudly serve as a Private with the 2nd Battalion of the 506th Replacement Company of the United States Army during the Korean War. After returning from active duty, Elmer married Mary June Williams on March 12, 1955 in Trafalgar. She preceded him in death on June 28, 2009 after 54 loving years of marriage.

Elmer worked for over 30 years as a tile setter for Chance Brothers in Indianapolis, retiring in 1994. He was a 50+ year member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local 4 in Indiana and Kentucky. Elmer was also the co-owner and operator of Ramey Trucking from 1966 – 1983.

He was a lifetime member of the Trafalgar United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Nineveh Masonic Lodge 317 and served as a Past Master of the Trafalgar Masonic Lodge in 1983. Elmer enjoyed pitching horseshoes as well as bowling competitively, even being awarded many trophies over the years. He was a member of the Highway Lanes Hall of Fame and bowled with several leagues including Chance Brothers, Silver Streakers and Friday Night Mix.

Spending time with family was important to Elmer. Monday mornings were always set aside for his brothers and sisters to come together, visit and eat breakfast. Elmer had a talent for woodworking and carpentry. His attention to detail and ability to be creative, allowed him to build many impressive pieces.  Most of all, Elmer will be remembered most for his craftsmanship, love of family and his unyielding faith in God.
