Elizabeth M. ‘Bettye’ Jeffs, age 91 went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday morning, January 15, 2022. She was a resident of Nineveh.
On November 13, 1930, Bettye Jeffs was born Elizabeth Marie Vaughn in Lexington, KY. Her parents were Erle and Marie (Jackson) Vaughn. Bettye is a graduate of Lafayette High School, Georgetown College (BA), and Indiana University (MS). She married Wallace Jeffs in Lexington on June 7, 1952.
Bettye taught preschool, kindergarten, and primary grades, as well as, children in Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and church camps. Through the years, she volunteered in schools, churches, charitable thrift shops, and Johnson Memorial Hospital. Handiwork is something she enjoyed as evidenced by a championship win for one of her quilts at the county fair. She also liked puzzles: jigsaw, crossword, Word Search, Sudoku, and Rubik's Cube. Watching and feeding birds was one of her pleasures, as well as keeping track of the phases of the moon. Although she lived in Hoosier land, Bettye rooted for the Wildcats when Indiana played Kentucky.
Throughout her life, Bettye was a student of Scripture and prayed regularly for her family and friends. She was a faithful team member with her husband through his pastorate of thirteen congregations—some full time and some part time. For a number of years, she has been a member of Amity Baptist Church, Franklin.
Bettye is survived by her husband of nearly seventy years, Rev. Wallace N. Jeffs, whom she married on June 7, 1952 in Lexington, KY. She is also survived by her children, Ruth (Steve) Wegman of Champaign, IL, Susan (Charles) Moman of Seymour and Doug (Laura) Jeffs of Carmel; as well as, twelve grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. Her only sibling, Jack (Sylvia) Vaughn of Texas is deceased.
