Donald E. Smith

Donald E. ‘Don’ Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning, April 20, 2022 at Traditions of Columbus.  He was a resident of Nashville and former resident of Whiteland.

Don was born December 10, 1931 in Nashville to his parents, the late Donald Arthur and Dolly “Monzell” (Hoover) Smith. He was a 1951 graduate of Nashville High School and went on to serve as a Corporal with the United States Army during the Korean War. Don retired as a Supervisor of the maintenance department with the Indiana State Board of Health after 33 years of service.

Donald had a love of life and never stopped moving. He enjoyed farming with his father and referred to his homestead as “Smith Farms.” Don loved buying and working on antique farm tractors.  He held various positions on the Brown County Fair Board and belonged to the Brown County Antique Machinery Association. Don also attended the Gnaw Bone Wesleyan Church in Nashville. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He married Nancy (Dillingham) Smith on October 16, 2017 in Carrollton, Kentucky.  She lovingly survives. Don is also survived by his daughters, Donna (Steve) Rains of Cloverdale and Denise Hancock of Indianapolis; step-children: Mick David of Nashville, Rick David of Terre Haute and Kimberly (Michael) Moss of Nashville; grandchildren, Heather (Ross) Hazel, Sarah (Rory) Schaub, Zach (Sara) Hancock, Josh Hancock, Trevor David, Mallory Moss, Brennen Moss and Matt Stargell; great-grandchildren, Emma, Elon, Jaidlynn and Kaelum; siblings, Thelma Keller, Lee Smith, Floyd Smith and Treva Edwards.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mary Joan (Percifield) Smith and siblings: Forest and Fred Smith, Wilma Wilson and Brenda East.

The Rev. Bob England will conduct a funeral service on Saturday at noon at the Gnaw Bone Wesleyan Church, 4928 Old State Road 46 in Nashville. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. A private family inurnment will be at a later date at Greenlawn Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center in Morgantown.
