Donald L. Altop, age 82, passed peacefully at his home in Brown County, Saturday, October 16, 2021 with his wife, Marian, and their loyal pet Willow (cockatiel) by his side.

Don was born May 2, 1939 to the late Ray C. Altop and Nova L (Zody) Altop in Bean Blossom, Indiana. Don graduated from Helmsburg High School in 1957 with the goal of employment with Cummins Engine Co. He was hired March 17, 1959 and after 30 years of enjoying the daily responsibilities and challenges of his journey with Cummins, he retired in 1989. Don was instrumental in starting the Fourth of July firework show in Brown County, which originated on Firework Hill. He continued to organize, and work the annual Brown County show for over 50 years.

After retirement, Don began each day enjoying the things he loved which included: custom woodworking, mushroom hunting, cutting firewood, and watching IU basketball, Indiana Pacers, and NASCAR. Most of all, Don loved to spend time with family and friends.

Don is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Marian, whom he married on December 26, 1982. He will also be missed by his sons, Steve Altop, and Bryan (Rebecca) Altop, both of Bloomington, IN and daughter, Marci (Chris) Cole of Tampa, Florida, grandchildren: Jocelyn, Brandon, Vivian, Lily, Marlena, and Arlo; and great grandchildren: Zackary, Zane, and Mateo.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Junior (Claudean) Altop and Jack (Ruth) Altop, sister, Lois Altop, and nephew, Richard Altop.
