Carolyn Hedger Obituary

Carolyn Joan (Chapman) Hedger, age 90, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, February 20, 2020 at Otterbein of Franklin.  She was a resident of Morgantown.

Carolyn was born April 9, 1929 in Morgan County, to her parents, the late Claude L. and Eva Almedia (Tracy) Chapman. She was a 1948 graduate of Morgantown High School.

Carolyn retired after 30 years as the owner and operator of the former Green Hill Drive-Inn Restaurant, an iconic Morgantown landmark. She purchased the restaurant in 1977 and held every position from dishwasher to cook. Carolyn especially enjoyed waiting on and visiting with her regular patrons, as well as, those customers who were just passing through. The restaurant was a staple in the community, serving their famous Green Hill Pizza and fried biscuits with apple butter. Green Hill Drive-Inn Restaurant is missed by many. Prior to Green Hill, she held bookkeeping positions for Ballard Ice Cream and Commonwealth Insurance Company, both of Indianapolis.

Carolyn was a 60-year member of the Morgantown Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School Teacher. She enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, sewing and quilting.

Carolyn was preceded in death on January 30, 1974 by her loving husband of 24 years, Dale L. Hedger, whom she married on September 17, 1949 in North Vernon. Carolyn later found companionship with Nathan E. “Bud” Smith. He preceded her in death on August 29, 2007. Carolyn was also preceded in death by siblings, Ida Smith, Veva Martindale, Margaret McKee, Lester and Lawrence Chapman.

She is survived by her children, Pam (Mike) Ferguson of Martinsville and Jackie (Shirley) Hedger of Morgantown; grandchildren, Andrew (Staci) Hedger, Paul (Angie) Hedger and Mandi (Charles) Brock all of Morgantown, Matt (Felicia) Sichting of Section, AL, Joy (Aaron) Jackson of Brown County, Michelle (fiancée, Todd Cosby) Ferguson of Morgantown, Kelly (Jim) Myers of Martinsville, Scott (Michelle) Ferguson of Houston, TX and Kevin (Ophelia) Ferguson of Temple, TX; and 23 great grandchildren.
