Heath Gibson Obituary

Heath S. Gibson, age 44 passed away all too soon on Friday morning, September 27, 2019 after a two year long courageous battle with adenocarcinoma. He was a resident of Brown County.   

Heath was born May 11, 1975, in Bloomington. He was a 1993 graduate of Brown County High School where he excelled in academics and athletics, with baseball being his favorite sport. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology/Criminology from Indiana State University in 1997. While attending ISU, Heath played on the Men’s Volleyball Team, which was very competitive, winning their conference as well as many tournaments throughout his college career. He was also a member of the Phi Delta Theta IN ETA Fraternity at ISU, where Heath served as the Social Chairman for four years.

He served his country as a Master-At-Arms for the United States Navy from 2007 to 2012. Heath served overseas in the Persian Gulf War and received many decorations, medals and citations for his efforts. While serving, he played on the military’s baseball team and was voted MVP.

He worked in sales and was a licensed insurance agent.

Heath was a member of the Unity Baptist Church in Brown County where he was an active member and would help with the Youth Programs and was part of the Financial Committee.

For the past 4 years, he was the host of Heath’s Annual “Golf for Cancer” Outing held at Salt Creek Golf Course in Nashville. Heath also participated annually in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk in memory of his grandmother. He felt strongly about his community and would give back by being involved in local charities. Heath enjoyed educating, encouraging and inspiring kids who had an interest in sports. His passion for baseball showed through when coaching his son’s baseball team.

Heath enjoyed the outdoors by deer hunting and playing golf. He was a fan of the New York Yankees, all music genres and was an avid moviegoer. Heath will be remembered for his love of family, his country and his Faith in God.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joan ‘Jo’ (Ortiz) Gibson, whom he married on December 12, 2009 in Nashville and together they had one son, Hunter Gibson, whom Heath greatly cherished. Also surviving are his parents, Duane and Judith Gibson of Brown County; brother, Nicholas (Kendra) Gibson of Brown County; in-laws, Alexander and Mitzi Ortiz of the Philippines; paternal grandmother, Mary Ann Gibson of Nashville; maternal grandfather, Henry Koehler of New York; sister in law, Mitchelle Chua of the Philippines; and nieces and nephews, Kenzie and Everett Gibson of Brown County and Monica, Mitzcha, Mykee and Axel Chua, all of the Philippines.

Heath is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Margaret Koehler and his paternal grandfather, Duane Gibson.

The Rev. Lee Snider will conduct a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 5th at the Unity Baptist Church, 7358 Spearsville Road in Brown County. A visitation for friends and family will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday, October 4th at the church. Military rites will be presented by the Brown County Honor Guard and the United States Navy. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Meredith-Clark Funeral Home in Morgantown.

In lieu of flowers and in keeping with Heath’s wishes, his family strongly encourages the donation of coffee and creamer supplies for the Veterans and their family’s that visit the Richard L. Roudebush VA Hospital in Indianapolis. Donations can be brought to the church or dropped off at the funeral home.
