Lester C. "Red" Smith, age 76 passed away Thursday
morning, November 24, 2011 at Kindred Hospital Indianapolis South
in Greenwood. He was a life-long resident of BrownCounty.
Red was born June 16, 1935 in Trafalgar to the
late Clayton D. and Annie (Scudder) Smith. He was a 1953 graduate
of Helmsburg High School and went on to serve with the United
States Navy. Red retired in 1991 from Cummins Diesel Engine Company
in Columbus, after 35 years of service.
He is survived by his step children: Glenn (Becky)
Barrick of Avon, Bonnie (Byron) Sailor of Greensburg, Rick Barrick
of Lexington, KY, Scott (Barbara) Barrick of Speedway, Tara (Bruce)
Willett of Cloverdale. He will be remembered by his siblings:
Joanne (Richard) Malott of Indianapolis, Steve Smith of Helmsburg
and Rod (Beverly) Smith of Reelsville. Red is also survived by
several step grandchildren & step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife: Betty
Jean (Jacobs) Smith. He went on to marry Eileen (Sutton)
Barrick-Smith on May 6, 1985 in Martinsville. She preceded him in
death on May 14, 2010. Red was also preceded in death by his twin
brother: Chester Smith and a sister: Juanita Lois Cottongim.
He was a member of the Martinsville Masonic Lodge,
Martinsville American Legion and attended Unity Baptist Church in
Brown County. He enjoyed reading westerns, collecting bolo ties,
spending time with his cats and was a fan of the Indianapolis
Colts.
The Rev. Walter Begley will conduct a funeral
service at 12:00 pm, Saturday at Meredith - Clark Funeral Home
Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in
Morgantown. Friends may call from 10 am till time of service
on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Nebo
Memorial Park Cemetery inMartinsville.
