James A. 'Jim' Hatchett passed away in his
95th year on Tuesday morning, March 13, 2012 at the
Franklin United Methodist Community. He was a long-time
resident of Morgantown.
Jim was born December 4, 1916 in Morgantown to the
late Otis B. and Glenna E. (Mosburg) Hatchett. He was a 1934
graduate of Morgantown High School and went on to graduate with
honors in 1939 with a B.A. Degree from Indiana University. During
his junior year he made the Dean's List and was elected to the Phi
Delta Kappa Men's National Education Society. With earning his
teaching degree's in Social Studies and Mathematics, Jim went on to
teach at Pekin Consolidated Schools in Indiana from 1941 to 1943
and then at Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee from 1943 to 1946.
While in Oak Ridge, Jim was a Sunday school teacher and a Boy Scout
Leader. From 1947 to 1956, he worked as the Assistant to the
General Manager at the Faucett - Umphrey Corp. inMorgantownand also
held the position of the Morgantown Town Clerk from 1955 to 1957.
Finally, in December of 1981, Jim retired as a Statistician and a
Field Examiner for the Indiana State Board of Accounts after 22
years of service.
After retirement, Jim enjoyed tutoring High School
dropouts to help them achieve their General Education Diplomas. He
was a very passionate artist who studied & traveled all around
the United States painting different landscapes with oil paintings.
Jim also enjoyed working with leaded stained glass and was a
profound reader of history.
Having never married, Jim was very close to his
family. He is survived by his sister: Faye Yount of Burnsville, MN;
one brother: William H. (wife, Marianne) Hatchett of Franklin and a
niece: Rebecca (husband, Richard) Ritter of Huffman, TX; two
nephews: Mark Yount of Burnsville, MN & Gary Yount of
Scottsdale, AZ and a cousin: Judith (husband, John) Waggoner of
Franklin.
Jim was preceded in death by a brother in law:
Woodrow Yount.
