Ida F. (Chapman) Smith age 91 passed away Friday evening, March
18, 2011 at the Grandview Convalescent Center in Martinsville. She
was a resident of Martinsville and a life-long resident of Morgan
County.
Ida was born July 20, 1919 in Morgantown to the late Claude L. and
Eva Almedia (Tracy) Chapman. She married William "Bill" Smith on
June 14, 1941 in Morgan County. Bill preceded her in death on April
5, 2001 after 59 loving years.
With her mother passing away at a young age, Ida quit school at age
14 to care for her brothers and sisters. Her siblings referred to
her as a mother, sister and good friend. Ida was a loving homemaker
and was a former member of the Mt. Nebo Community Church in
Martinsville and attended the Pleasant Grove Christian Church in
Morgan County. She was a past member of the Morgan County Farm
Bureau and the Modern Woodman of America. Ida was known for her
weekly news stories in the Martinsville Reporter.
She enjoyed quilting, genealogy and helping others in need. Ida
loved spending time with her family and two dogs: Spikey &
Bear.
She is survived by a sister: Carolyn Hedger of Martinsville;
brother: Lawrence Chapman of Martinsville; four nieces: Anita Haugh
of Greenwood, Pam Ferguson, Vickie Singer & Shirley Zupancic
all of Martinsville; six nephews: Ron McKee, Mike McKee & Steve
Chapman all of Martinsville, Larry Chapman of Trafalgar, Jack
Hedger & Rickey Chapman both of Morgantown.
Ida was preceded in death by two sisters: Veva Martindale and
Margaret McKee; one brother: Lester Chapman; two nieces: Rita
Greenwood & Karla Chapman and one nephew: Gary
Martindale.
The Rev. John Irvin will conduct a funeral service 1 pm Tuesday at
Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization
Center, 179 E. Mulberry St. in Morgantown. Friends may call from 11
am till service time on Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be
at Mt. Nebo Community Church Cemetery in Martinsville.
Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Ida to any
missionary work at a church of the donor's choice.
