Gary J. Snider, age 73 passed away Tuesday evening, April 20,
2010 at Bloomington Hospital. He was a resident of Brown
County.
Gary was born January 24, 1937 in Indianapolis to the late Abe and
Peggy (Abel) Snider. While serving with the United States Army at
the Red Canyon Military Base in Carrizozo, NM, he met a young lady
by the name of Jane Zumwalt. Gary wrote in a letter to his mother
back home, "I did not think they made girls like this out here".
Gary went on to marry Jane on March 25, 1960 in Carrizozo. He
precedes her in death after 50 devoted years.
Gary was the loving father to: Vickie R. Trommater and her husband
Eric & Jackie G. Wagler and her husband Darryl both of Brown
County and Greg J. Snider and his wife Cara of Indianapolis. He
will be remembered by his sister: Marilyn Noll of Houston, TX; and
was an inspiration to his four grandchildren: Amanda and Carrie
Trommater and Gena Wagler & "papaw's ole' buddy" Steve
Wagler.
Gary retired in 1994 as a Communication Technician with Indiana
Bell Telephone Company after 35 years of service. He loved his job
and enjoyed helping people and making new friends.
Gary was a 1956 graduate of Helmsburg High School, a member of the
St. Agnes Catholic Church in Nashville, a member of the Telephone
Pioneers Club and the Brown County Jaycee's during the
1970's.
Gary was very active with the Democrat Party in Brown County. He
was elected to the Brown County Counsel from 1984 to 1988 and was
then elected as County Commissioner in 1998 serving a 4 year term.
He also served a four year term as a commissioner in the 1970's
during the blizzard. For the past 15 years, Gary worked as an
Election Technician for the Brown County Election Board. He was a
past board member of Brown County Water.
Gary enjoyed auto racing and especially the Indy 500. He started a
62 year tradition by attending the Indy 500 with his father in 1947
and has carried out the tradition with his son Greg and grandson
Steve. Gary also enjoyed playing golf, talking with his friends,
working in his yard and spending time with his dog Bucky. He was a
fan of Indiana Univeristy basketball and pheasant hunting in South
Dakota for the past 50 years.
